The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today suffered another jolt when its Fatehgarh Sahib Yuva Morcha President Ajay Kumar Niwan joined the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in the presence of senior leader Bikram Singh Majithia here.

Welcoming Ajay Kumar Niwan into the party fold, Mr Bikram Majithia said the Yuva Morcha leader would be given due honour and recognition. He lauded Niwan for listening to the voice of his conscience and choosing to side with the cause of the farming community which was feeling betrayed at the hands of the central government. SAD Amloh halqa sewadar Gurpreet Singh Rajukhanna was also present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Ajay Niwan said he had resigned from the BJP in protest against the treatment being meted out to farmers and the obstinate attitude of the BJP central leadership which was refusing to address their concerns. He said he had apprised the BJP State leadership of the angst against the party amongst the peasantry but the party did not care to listen to his feedback. “I am also deeply worried at the crude attempts being made to polarize the people of Punjab and pit ruralites against urbanites. This policy could spoil the communal atmosphere in the State and will have dangerous fallouts. I could not remain in the BJP in the light of all these developments”.

Mr Gurpreet Rajukhanna said BJP Yuva Morcha members were set to join the SAD in a big way in the coming days. “There is a growing feeling that the SAD alone is capable to fighting for the cause of the peasantry including farmers and khet mazdoor as well as traders, all of whom are intrinsically linked to each other”.

A number of Yuva Morcha workers as well as industrialist Pradeep Sharma, who was in the Congress party earlier, joined the SAD today. Youth Akali Dal (YAD) district president Iqbal Singh Rai was also present on the occasion.
